Many elementary teachers find coming up with creative bulletin boards stressful. Creating an appealing bulletin board for your classroom does not have to be difficult. There are many ideas out there you can modify to suit your own style---the same is true when creating a fall-themed bulletin board.

Leaf Photos

One easy bulletin board that allows you to display the pictures of every child in your classroom is a leaf photo wall. Take a photograph of each child on the first day of school. Have the pictures printed at your local drugstore. Trace the shapes of leaves onto fall-colored construction paper. Allow the students to choose a leaf and cut it out. Then have them glue their pictures onto the leaves and write their names above the photos. Hang each leaf on the bulletin board. Not only does this display get you in the mood for fall, but it's also a great way to help the children remember each other's names.

Good Habits

A great way to set the ground rules in your classroom---and help your students develop good habits---is to have the rules listed on the bulletin board. Cover the bulletin board in black paper. Your local teacher supply store will have leaf-patterned border, which you can apply to the edges. Cut out a tree trunk and branches from brown paper and apply that to the board. Then cut out a bunch of leaf shapes from construction paper and write a good habit or rule on each one. Then hang the leaves from the branches of the tree. If you want to add students' names to the board as well, cut out apples from red construction paper and write the names on them. Then scatter the apples around the bottom of the tree.

Fall Scene

Creating a fall scene on the bulletin board can be tied into lessons about the season. Cover the board in gold, yellow, red, orange, or brown paper. Use silk, which are available at a craft store, to create a border around the bulletin board. Use brown paper to create a basket and cut it out. Fill it with cut outs of fall vegetables such as squash and pumpkins. Another nice touch is a scarecrow made out of construction paper. Use the different decorations to teach your students about color changing leaves, vegetables, and you can tie the scarecrow in to a storybook.

Thanksgiving Theme

As the holiday approaches, you can use Thanksgiving-themed decorations for a fall bulletin board. Using construction paper, make a cornucopia. Cut out different seasonal fruits and vegetables. Have students write what they are thankful for on each, and stick them in the cornucopia. You can also purchase pilgrim men and women at your local teacher supply store to enhance this theme. With the pilgrims, ask students to cut out a different Thanksgiving meal favorite of theirs, such as a turkey, pumpkin pie, or mashed potatoes, and write their name on them. Place these on the bulletin board as well to finish off the Thanksgiving feast.
